With Martha Tilson's voice added to the line-up and Donald Johnson's drums at the centre, the Manchester group pulled funk and African rhythm deep into their sound, moving further from post-punk austerity toward the dancefloor. The seven-and-a-half-minute \"Knife Slits Water\" was issued as a single, and the nine tracks from \"Lucinda\" to \"Below The Canal\" trace that shift. It topped the UK independent chart and reached No. 53 on the national albums chart.
