Cowell wrote all six tunes. Stanley Clarke, still early in his career, plays acoustic bass and Jimmy Hopps is on drums. Cowell's rolling chords are matched in intensity by Clarke, and Hopps plays loose and impressionistic, as if, in one critic's phrase, he had four hands. Cowell uses dissonance to build tension rather than as colour, and the compositions carry a weight that sets the record apart from the cooler ECM sessions around it. An unusually American, hard-driving entry in the label's early catalogue.
