New Zealand-born pianist Mike Nock made immense creative contributions to new jazz, forming the electric group "Fourth Way" in the late 1960s. Ondas, his only ECM date recorded in 1981, finds him leading an acoustic piano trio with a dexterous bassist and a free-thinking drummer. Nock's very open compositions leave plenty of room for each to shine. In these pieces, Eddie Gomez's elastic bass often becomes a second lead voice, and Jon Christensen's pulse is felt as a continuous wave.
