The late '60s were an explosive time in America. While the power of flowers blossomed, the civil rights movement flourished, and American soldiers fought in Vietnam, American musicians were making several brands of rebellious music at home. One such musician, a trombonist/conga player from Pontiac, Michigan, was fed up with the unstable political climate. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Melvin Price set sail for Sweden and soon began gigging with Scandinavian jet-set jazz musicians. In 1974, after a double-disc percussive album primarily intended to aid dance instruction, Price wrote and recorded the soul-jazz masterpiece "Rhythm and Blues" for his Mel-Dor label. Released. The music was simple yet evocative, pairing a disciplined Swedish session player with an imported Latin American percussionist. "Rhythm And Blues" has not been widely distributed overseas and has recorded the highest price at auction in recent years. This reissue is the fourth release on Wax Poetics Records.
