Usfret is the debut album by Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu, released in 1988. Produced during a period that overlapped with his time at ECM and Oregon, this important work essentially links Western jazz with Indian classical music.
Featuring Ralph Towner, Don Cherry, Shankar, and his mother, the renowned vocalist Shobha Gurtu, this album naturally combines the tranquil acoustic beauty of ECM with the free jazz spirit exemplified by Don Cherry, set against the hybrid rhythms of tabla and drums. This is a grand-scale crossover work that doesn't limit its cross-cultural fusion to mere technique.
