Released in 1972, Liberated Brother is the debut album by Weldon Irvine, a prominent figure in the NYC jazz scene. While known as Nina Simone's exclusive touring pianist, Irvine's solo work had been less well-received, and this album was a definitive demonstration of his talent as a composer.
It's hard to believe that this album was completed with only two days of rehearsal and five hours of recording, and it's packed with great tracks, including the title track "Liberated Brother," which was covered by Horace Silver; "Mr. Clean," which was featured by Freddie Hubbard and others; "Sister Sanctified," which was later rediscovered through sampling; and "Homey," a rare groove classic. This is an important work that stands out for its compositional prowess even among 1970s jazz/soul artists.
