A reissue of the independent jazz masterpiece "Blow Thru Your Mind" by Byard Lancaster & Unity, originally released in the US in 1974. As the name implies, Unity was formed with similar values, purposes, and goals as many other spiritually conscious groups of the era. What made them unique was their successful fusion of the musical and spiritual explorations of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, and Ornette Coleman, with the experimental New York art music dimension brought to the group by vocalist Jay Clayton, who had performed with Steve Reich and others. Bassist Milton Suggs played in Sun Ra's Arkestra, and Byard Lancaster studied under Ornette Coleman and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Byard Lancaster's music was first included in Soul Jazz Records' early compilation "Universal Sounds Of America," alongside tracks by Sun Ra, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Pharoah Sanders, and Steve Reid. Originally released and hand-sold on Unity's own EPI label, this record has remained an underground classic for over 25 years.
