Eddie Russ's debut album "Fresh Out" was recorded in Detroit in 1974 and released on the independent Jazz Masters label. Russ leads the Detroit jazz players known as The Mixed Bag group, creating a funky, bubbling jazz-funk vibe with a lounge-like appeal.

Eddie Russ was a pivotal figure who emerged from the vibrant underground jazz scene in Detroit during the early 1970s, a period when the city was culturally and economically devastated after Motown's departure in the late 1960s. This scene included the musical collective "Tribe" (whose members included Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, Phil Ranelin, Harold McKinney, and Doug Hammond) and Kenny Cox's "Strata Records."
