Manteca's remastered reissue album, a joint release by Osaka's VOX MUSIC, EM RECORDS, and UK's Honest Jones.

Manteca, real name Lázaro Pla, was a Cuban bongo master active since the 1940s. Discovered by the giant of Cuban music, pianist and composer Ernesto Lecuona (also famous for writing the standard "The Breeze and I"), he joined Lecuona's The Cuban Boys and was at the forefront of the global Cuban music boom of the era. Manteca was involved in many recordings in Cuba, but very few of his leader works were recorded as a solo artist or with a small combo. This album is one of his rare leader works and is also a rare album for thoroughly showcasing the core of Cuban percussion.

This work is said to have been recorded in Miami with American musicians in the early 70s when Manteca visited the US as a member of a Cuban orchestra (accurate information is not available). It features a heavy and tight electric bass and drums reminiscent of Americana funk, with Manteca heavily pounding the bongos/timbales, resulting in a truly hardcore Afro-Cuban funk. In particular, "Afro Funky," with its growling electric bass, is a renowned top track, an essential heavy Latin funk that would make fans of the Har-You Percussion Group swoon. As a result, original LPs are constantly sought after.
Unlike the CD mastering, which has been somewhat controversial due to its thin sound, this LP issue delivers a high-quality press that achieves the same chest-thumping heavy sound as the original! The jacket features the original artwork!
