The latter half of the 60s was an explosive time in America. As flower power blossomed, the Civil Rights movement gained traction, and American troops fought in Vietnam, musicians back home were crafting several brands of rebellious music. One such musician, a trombonist/conga player from Pontiac, Michigan, was fed up with the unstable political climate. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Melvyn Price set sail for Sweden, and quickly started gigging with Scandinavia’s jet-set jazz musicians. In 1974, after two double-disc percussive albums primarily intended to assist dance instruction, Price composed, recorded, and released a soul jazz masterpiece, “Rhythm And Blues,” on his own Mel-Dor label. The music was simple yet intoxicating, pairing disciplined Swedish session players with imported Latin American percussionists. “Rhythm And Blues” never enjoyed widespread international distribution, and in recent years has fetched top dollar at auction. This reissue is the fourth release by Wax Poetics Records.
