Documenting Sun Ra's performance at the 1972 Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival, "Life Is Splendid" catches the Arkestra at its most gloriously psychedelic — in a good way. While Ra's early '50s and '60s output had the Arkestra firmly entrenched in the Fletcher Henderson camp of orchestral elegance while exploring the outer reaches of the avant-garde, this post-Woodstock, post-Hendrix Arkestra is firmly in tune with the electro-psychedelic vibe of the day. Its intensity is comparable to Miles Davis' electrified Agartha and Pangaea bands. Boiling over with catharsis, the Arkestra at this stage connected with the then MC5 fan base and sounds more like Sonic Youth than the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra today. (BY BILL MILKOWSKI)
