Sextet, released by Factory in January 1982, was A Certain Ratio's third album and the first without Martin Hannett at the controls: the band produced it themselves at Revolution Studios in Cheadle Hulme. With Martha Tilson's voice added to the line-up and Donald Johnson's drums at the centre, the Manchester group pulled funk and African rhythm deep into their sound, moving further from post-punk austerity toward the dancefloor. The seven-and-a-half-minute "Knife Slits Water" was issued as a single, and the nine tracks from "Lucinda" to "Below The Canal" trace that shift. It topped the UK independent chart and reached No. 53 on the national albums chart. Original UK pressing in the textured sleeve, with clear inner and insert.
