Alice Coltrane's fourth solo album. The title Satchidananda was inspired by Swami Satchidananda, with whom Coltrane became close during her apprenticeship.

"Shiva-Loka," or "Realm of Shiva," refers to the domain of the "dissolver of creation," the third constituent of the Hindu trinity. "Stopover Bombay" alludes to Coltrane's planned five-week stay in India and Sri Lanka in December 1970, and "Something About John Coltrane" is based on themes by her late husband, John Coltrane. "Isis And Osiris," featuring Charlie Haden on bass in place of Cecil McBee and Vishnu Wood on music, showcases Coltrane's interest in Middle Eastern and North African music and culture. The presence of the tambura played by Tulsi reflects Coltrane's interest in Indian classical music and religion.
