Alice Coltrane's fourth solo album. The title Satchidananda was inspired by Swami Sachidananda, whom Coltrane became close to during his apprentice days.

"Shiva-Loka" or "Kingdom of Shiva" refers to the realm of the "Dissolver of Creation", the third member of the Hindu Trinity. " "Stopover Bombay" refers to a five-week stay in India and Sri Lanka that Coltrane was to stay in December 1970, " "Something About John Coltrane" is based on a theme by her late husband John Coltrane. Charlie Haden replaces Cecil McBee on bass and Vishnu Wood on music." Isis And Osiris" demonstrates Coltrane's interest in the music and culture of the Middle East and North Africa. The presence of the tumblr played by Tulsi reflects Coltrane's interest in Indian classical music and religion.
