A Discreet Music
B (i) Fullness Of Wind
B (ii) French Catalogues
B (iii) Brutal Ardour
In 1975, bedridden after an accident, Brian Eno was given a record of 18th-century harp music and began thinking about music that "didn't impose itself on your space". The result was the third release in his Obscure series. Side A, about half an hour long, runs short phrases from an EMS Synthi AKS sequencer through a graphic equaliser and a tape-delay system, so that overlapping loops keep generating the piece almost by themselves. Side B has Gavin Bryars conducting the Cockpit Ensemble through three rule-based variations on Pachelbel's Canon. A founding ambient record, here in the 1976 red-label repress.
