Eddie Russ' debut album Fresh Out was recorded in Detroit in 1974 and released on the independent Jazz Masters label. Russ leads Detroit jazz players The Mixed Bag group with a funky, frothy jazz-funk vibe and a lounge-like appeal.
Eddie Russ was a key figure in the emergence of Detroit's vibrant underground jazz scene in the early 1970s, which was in turmoil both culturally and economically following the departure of Motown in the late 1960s. The scene included the musical collective "Tribe" (members of Wendell Harrison, Marcus Belgrave, Phil Llanelin, Harold McKinney, Doug Hammond) and Kenny Cox's "Strata Records". "
