Cacharpaya (Panpipes Of The Andes) is a representative work by Incantation, a British project active in the 1980s. It features melodies centered on the zampona (panpipes), based on traditional Andean music, combined with arrangements using synthesizers and rhythm machines. While respecting folk music phrases, the sound, neatly constructed with studio technology of the time, symbolizes the international spread of world music. The soundscape, where simplicity and artificial textures coexist, possesses a unique charm different from pure folk recreation. This album reinterprets the image of Andean music as a pop/listening work.
