Jorge Reyes co-founded Chac Mool, one of Mexico's first progressive rock bands, then studied improvisation in Hamburg and Indian flute and percussion in the Himalayas before turning to a music built from pre-Hispanic instruments and electronics. Comala, made with Arturo Meza and La Tribu and first released in Mexico in 1986, appears here in its 1989 Spanish edition on Grabaciones Accidentales. Shakers, bamboo flutes, lamellophones and tribal percussion meet chanting and Berlin School-inspired electronics in freeform, collage-like patterns. The eleven-minute title track fills most of side A, and the record also carries the voice of María Sabina and poems read by Saide Sesín. An early work by the Mexican ambient and fourth-world pioneer, issued in Spain by one of the country's first independent labels.
