ORM were Pavel Růžička and Petr Dvořák, two Czechoslovak musicians who formed an electronic duo in the late 1970s after years playing funk and blues in Western clubs. Tropic was recorded in 1983 at the studio of Prague's Smetana Theatre and released on Panton. Kamelie, a female vocal duo, was brought in to help sales, but the record leans toward experiment rather than chart pop. Demos were made at home on a four-track and finished in the studio, using a Prophet-5 bought in West Berlin and a home-built drum machine; without MIDI, parts were recorded slowly and played back fast, which accounts for the racing sequences on pieces like "Poseidon" and "Indické Meditace". A 1984 repress of an Eastern Bloc synth record made against the odds.
