When Ornette Coleman arrived to play Fairfield Halls in Croydon on 29 August 1965, the Musicians' Union told him the jazz quota for foreign players was full but the classical one was not. So he wrote a piece for wind quintet. "Sounds And Forms For Wind Quintet", played by London's Virtuoso Ensemble, fills all of side A: ten short movements for flute, oboe, clarinet, cor anglais and bassoon, each one greeted by applause. Side B returns to the trio with David Izenzon and Charles Moffett, Coleman moving between alto, violin and trumpet, stretching "Clergyman's Dream" over twelve minutes. First issued by Polydor in 1967, the concert was reissued by Freedom in 1972 in two volumes. UK pressing of Volume 1, gatefold.
