Soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom recorded this in March 1978 as Outline, a duo with bassist Kent McLagan, at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, Connecticut. It came out on the Outline label she founded while studying at Yale, and is among her earliest recordings. Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge" and Miles Davis's "Solar" sit beside pieces like "Braxton Bop", all played by just soprano and double bass. The balance between structure and improvisation that critics hear in her later work is already here, in the barest possible setting.
