Pianist Stanley Cowell recorded this trio session in New York on 29 November 1972, with Manfred Eicher producing for ECM, where it became ECM 1026. Cowell wrote all six tunes. Stanley Clarke, still early in his career, plays acoustic bass and Jimmy Hopps is on drums. Cowell's rolling chords are matched in intensity by Clarke, and Hopps plays loose and impressionistic, as if, in one critic's phrase, he had four hands. Cowell uses dissonance to build tension rather than as colour, and the compositions carry a weight that sets the record apart from the cooler ECM sessions around it. An unusually American, hard-driving entry in the label's early catalogue. This is the 1973 Japanese issue on Trio.
