"Life Is Splendid," which recorded Sun Ra's performance at the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival in 1972, captures the archestra's most psychological state in a good way. In the early 50's and 60's, Ra's orchestra stepped firmly into Fletcher Henderson's orchestra elegance camp, exploring the outside of the avant-garde, but after Woodstock and after Hendrix, this orchestra , It matches well with the electro-psychedelic atmosphere of the time. Its intensity is comparable to the bands of Agartha and Pangea that Miles Davis was running electricity on. The simmering cathartic orchestra connected with MC5 fans at the time and is now more like Sonic Youth than the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. (BYBILL MILKOWSKI)
