The Pop Group started out in Bristol as a funk-influenced band, and by the time they recorded their debut they had fused punk's urgency with funk rhythm, free jazz and dub. Y was produced by Dennis "Blackbeard" Bovell, a dub reggae man, at Ridge Farm Studios in Surrey, and released on Radar in April 1979. Under Mark Stewart's howled vocals, Simon Underwood and Bruce Smith keep the rhythm taut, Gareth Sager cuts across with saxophone and piano, and Bovell's echo and dropouts tear the arrangements open. Critics have described the result as abstract yet danceable; "Thief Of Fire" and the six-minute "We Are Time" show both sides. This 1996 Radar reissue adds the debut single "She Is Beyond Good And Evil" at the start, in a gatefold with printed inner.
