Released in 1988, Usfret is the debut album by Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu. Produced during a period overlapping with his work around ECM and his time with Oregon, this is an important work that essentially blends Western jazz and Indian classical music.
Featuring Ralph Towner, Don Cherry, Shankar, and his mother, the renowned vocalist Shobha Gurtu, this album naturally interweaves the serene sonic beauty characteristic of ECM with the free jazz spirit embodied by Don Cherry, all set against a hybrid rhythm of tabla and drums. It is a large-scale crossover work that goes beyond merely showcasing technical skill in cross-cultural fusion.
