Released in 1972, "Liberated Brother" is the debut album by Weldon Irvine, an active figure in the NYC jazz scene, and his first independently produced work. Although Irvine was well-known as Nina Simone's exclusive touring pianist, his solo work often went unrecognized. This album definitively showcased his talent as a composer.
Despite being completed with only two days of rehearsal and five hours of recording, the album boasts a remarkable level of perfection, featuring a collection of masterpieces including the title track "Liberated Brother," covered by Horace Silver; "Mr. Clean," adopted by Freddie Hubbard and others; "Sister Sanctified," which was re-evaluated through sampling in later years; and "Homey," renowned as a rare groove classic. This is an important work that stands out for its high level of compositional skill even among 70s jazz/soul.
